INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A meeting between two men that appeared to be an e-commerce exchange turned deadly Monday afternoon on the southwest side, police said.
A struggle ensued when one man pulled out a gun during their brief conversation in the parking lot of Mann Road Pantry, a convenience store located at 4402 Mann Road, according to authorities.
At least one shot was fired, striking and killing one of the men. Officials on Thursday identified the victim as 18-year-old Daemon Link. His cause of death was listed as gunshot wounds and homicide.
“I watched that [man] take his last breath,” a witness told News 8. “I was so scared! I thought my life was coming to an end.”
More than dozen police units were dispatched to the scene around 4:10 p.m.
Detectives were unable to confirm Monday night if the shooting was accidental or intentional, according to a spokesperson for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD).
The second man involved in the incident was cooperating with investigators, police said, and had not been arrested Monday night.
Authorities were unable to confirm what the men were planning to exchange and why they met in front of the convenience store instead of a designated e-commerce exchange zone.
“We all get on the internet,” said IMPD spokesperson Genae Cook. “We continue to do our transactions… At each roll call, we have areas set up for e-commerce and we ask [community members to] please use those. Understand that if you don’t feel comfortable [at] the place that you’re going or [around] the people that you’re talking to, the transaction just isn’t worth it.”
