Person uses birthday money to buy cops’ lunches

COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) – One person’s birthday tradition is touching the hearts of police officers.

A Columbus citizen started taking police officers, firefighters and EMTs out for lunch on their birthday several years ago.

The Columbus Police Department posted a letter one of their officers received on Monday.

The letter explains that the good Samaritan’s grandmother used to give them $50 for their birthday every year, even into their 30s.

The grandmother died in January but the person wanted to keep the tradition alive, and stay anonymous.

So this year, they sent five letters and five gift cards to the “unsung heroes” in the police department.

In return? They only asked the officers to send them a list of names for next year.
