Police catch man after chase ends in crash near Carmel
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A police chase ended on the north side of Indianapolis Tuesday morning when officials say the suspect vehicle crashed and the man in the car ran.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, it started as a burglary in progress call in the 900 block of Lake Nora. Officers were told that the suspect was seen leaving the scene in a black Pontiac Grand AM.
An officer who was in the area of 91st Street and College Avenue saw the vehicle traveling south on College and alerted officers that the suspect refused to stop. That’s when the chase began.
The chase got onto Interstate 465. Police say the vehicle pursuit ended at 96th and Michigan when the suspect crashed into a pick-up truck and bailed from the vehicle. IMPD says a medic was called there because someone was possibly injured when the suspect vehicle crashed. Police say the driver of the truck only complained of pain from the crash.
Around 9:30 a.m., the male suspect was still on the run and officers were searching the area for him. He was said to be holding something, possibly a knife.
The search lasted for about 15 minutes. IMPD confirmed the suspect was taken into custody in the 9600 block of North Augusta Drive in Carmel with the help of Carmel Police and Indiana State Police officers. His name has not been released.
IMPD said that the man who called to report the robbery told them that he came home and noticed his front door was kicked in and he overheard the suspect in the apartment. He walked away from the apartment and called police, according to IMPD.
Police say the suspect will likely face preliminary charges of burglary, resisting law enforcement and driving on a suspended license. IMPD was able to recover most of the items that were stolen from the apartment.
