IMPD: Gunman shot 2 women before pointing gun at police

Friday, Sept. 25, 2020 UPDATE: Police say a suspect pointed a gun at officers when an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer fired at the man, striking him. Police at the scene initially reported the suspect had fired a shot at the officer.

The incident stemmed from a large disturbance outside a residence in the 4500 block of East Pleasant Run Parkway North Drive Sunday around noon.

At a Sunday afternoon briefing at the scene of the fight and shooting on the city’s east side, IMPD Sgt. Grace Sibley with IMPD Public Affairs said the man shot by police had fired at least one shot at the officers. An incident summary released to News 8 the following day said the man pointed a firearm at the arriving officers but did not say he fired a shot at the officers. The summary said he pointed the firearm after running from the scene to a nearby car and receiving verbal commands from the officers.

Previous Reporting:

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police shot a suspect who fired at least one shot at them while they were responding to a disturbance call at an apartment complex on the city’s east side Sunday.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called around noon to the 4500 block of East Pleasant Run Parkway North Drive on reports of a disturbance in the area.

IMPD Sgt. Grace Sibley said when officers arrived to the scene they encountered a large disturbance outside the residence and heard shots being fired. Police say when the officers got out of their vehicles they encountered an armed suspect.

The suspect pointed a gun at the officers and fired at least one shot, Sibley said. Officers returned fire and struck the suspect and he was apprehended with his weapon without further incident.

It is unclear how many officers fired shots at the suspect or what the suspect’s condition is.

Police at the scene found two women who had sustained gunshot wounds as a result of the disturbance officers were called to. Those victims were transported to the hospital in stable condition.

It is unclear how many officers fired shots at the suspect. Sibley said the body-worn cameras that are being phased into the department had not yet been installed on the uniforms of the officers involved.

“We’re trying to review surveillance video, we’re trying to talk to witnesses, we’re trying to do everything we can to figure out exactly what happened and exactly who shot who first,” Sgt. Sibley said.

Nikesha House lives nearby and saw the disturbance as she was walking along. She said she heard eight gunshots before police arrived.

“It’s crazy out here nowadays people need to learn how to get together,” House said. We need to coexist together. All the violence going on over here is beyond me. My nephew was murdered two months ago and it’s all just sad.”

Her nephew Uriah Hunt was killed in Cumberland on July 26, about 7 miles away from the scene Sunday.

“It’s so sad over here. We need to learn to get along,” House said.

It’s unclear how many officers fired shots, but they are on administrative leave which is standard procedure while both internal and criminal investigations are conducted.
