Indiana early voting starts Wednesday

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — News 8 is your local election headquarters.

Early voting starts Wednesday October 10, 2018 across the state. Hundreds of early voting sites will be open.

State Representative, Greg Porter, an Indianapolis Democrat said, “It’s crucial right now. These are mid-term elections. I think individuals should have the opportunity to participate in the process over a longer period of time.”

Starting Wednesday, October 10, you’ll have a little less than 30 days to vote early in Indiana.

State Senator Roderic Bray, a Republican from Martinsville said, “Voting’s important every season. This one’s a big one, we’ve got some big races. We’re going to decide who’s going to be in our United States Senate this year plus lots of state and local races.”

At the Statehouse, some state lawmakers say there’s a deeper reason, or benefit to early voting.”

“I think people are more in-tune to what is transpiring not only in this country, but in the great state of Indiana,” said Porter.

Secretary of State, Connie Lawson said you can vote at your county clerk’s office.

“A lot of the county clerk’s offices will be open on some Saturdays.”

Check out your county’s website and find other polling places. You can also apply for an absentee ballot, and vote by mail.

Lawson explained, “It has to be delivered by noon on election day, so they shouldn’t wait too late.”

Remember, if you vote early in person, you’ll need your government ID.

“I think it’s good to remind people that they can vote on an expired state issued ID, as long as it hasn’t been expired before the last general election,” said Lawson.

Lawson said that’s probably the biggest security protection at the polls.

“They’re going to be looking at that ID. They’ll be looking at the picture. It’s really not about the address, it’s about the picture, to show you are who you say you are.”
