Portage man drowns while saving his girlfriend in Lake Michigan

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WISH) — A Portage man drowned Sunday at Washington Park beach, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Investigators say Donald Turner, 28, was swimming in Lake Michigan when his girlfriend began to struggle in the water. After helping her to safety, Turner was pulled under the water and did not resurface.

Just after 4:30 p.m., emergency crews responded to a call about a person missing in the water. Upon locating Turner’s body a short distance from where he disappeared, the Michigan City Fire Department attempted live-saving measures.

Turner was then taken to Franciscan Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
