White River Vision Plan

News 8's Richard Essex reports.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Area leaders on Monday released a long-term plan to change the look of the White River in downtown Indianapolis.

Officials with Indianapolis, Hamilton County tourism and other government sources spent three years developing a plan for 58 miles of the White River.

There are dozens of proposed areas for redevelopment along the White River. Officials mentioned the old General Motors stamping plant on East Washington Street as an example. There are also several bridges and other structures from Broad Ripple north to Hamilton County that have the potential for nearby retail and residential development.

Emily Mack, director of the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development, said some areas are better left alone “where it is not appropriate to have development or even feasible.” Some of those areas include privately owned farmland or areas that are difficult to access due to lack of or roads and trails.

The conservative price for this 30-year plan is in the billions. But, nothing will get done without a management structure, which officials hope to have in place before summer ends.
