SE Indiana man shot dead by deputy was unarmed

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — A man was shot and killed by police in Jefferson County after an altercation Saturday morning, according to Indiana State Police.

The man was unarmed, Jefferson County Sheriff John Wallace told the Associated Press.

ISP says Jefferson County deputies responded to a domestic dispute call in the 4000 block of County Road 400 West shortly before 5 a.m.

Upon arrival, deputies got into an altercation with John Unsworth, 43, of Hanover.

In the course of the altercation, one of the deputies shot Unsworth.

Unsworth died of his injuries.

Wallace told the AP “there were a number of significant factors that led the deputy to use lethal force.” However, he said he could not elaborate because the shooting is under investigation by Indiana State Police.
