Sheriff: Mother faked kidnapping, threw infant down ravine

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WSPA) – A mother, who was initially reported as being kidnapped with her 7-week-old baby on Thursday, has been charged with attempted murder.

Krista Noelle Madden, 35, has been charged by the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office with attempted first-degree murder. The kidnappings were reported around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

More than four hours after the initial report, investigators shared that the 7-week-old baby was found safe in Henderson County. Madden and her vehicle were also found in Henderson County.

On Friday, authorities said Madden was arrested in Henderson County and was taken to the Henderson County Detention Center, where she was being held on $750,000 bond.

Henderson County Sheriff Lowell Griffin said the baby had been tossed over a bank and was in a car seat, but appeared to have rolled out of the car seat. Sheriff Griffin said the drop was 50-75 feet down.

“By the grace of God, we are standing here with a child that’s been discovered and is alive,” said Sheriff Griffin. He also said investigators believe Krista Madden acted alone.

Madden is expected to appear in bond court around noon Friday. She could face more charges as the investigation continues.
