Sheriff: Property owner arrested after fatally shooting man he mistook for robber

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — A 62-year-old man was arrested Thursday after investigators say he fatally shot a 43-year-old man at a home near Bloomington.

Deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the home of Garry Hicks, 62, in the 3400 block of Knightridge Road just before 1 a.m. Thursday and found 43-year-old James “Mike” Troxal with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Witnesses told investigators Troxal had been living in a garage on the property, the sheriff’s office said.

After several hours, investigators determined that Hicks had recently been concerned that people were trying to rob him, prompting him to patrol his property at night with a shotgun. People interviewed by investigators said Hicks had lately declined in mental capacity. The sheriff’s office investigation determined that Hicks was outside when Troxal was walking to the garage, mistook Troxal for a robber and shot him.

The sheriff’s office Thursday said it expected Hicks would be charged with murder and being a dangerous felon in possession of a firearm.
