Shots fired at or near IMPD North District headquarters; 4 juveniles taken into custody
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reported shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday that it has ended restrictions to an area around the North District headquarters after police officers were shot at or near there Wednesday night.
Four 17-year-old juveniles have been arrested in the incident for resisting law enforcement. Additionally, a firearm that was recovered in the area had been reported stolen. Police say their investigation has revealed that they were not shooting at officers.
Multiple calls came into the dispatch center shortly after 11:10 p.m. Wednesday from the headquarters, 3120 E. 30th St. That’s between Keystone Avenue and Sherman Drive.
James Gillespie, a public information officer with IMPD, said Wednesday night it was not immediately clear what happened, but shots were fired at or near the North District headquarters. A tweet from IMPD about 12:20 a.m. Thursday indicated a search was ongoing for suspects. Police cars had blocked 30th Street and other neighborhood streets south of the police headquarters.
The North District serves an area roughly north from 30th to 96th streets between Michigan Road and Shadeland Avenue, plus much of the far-northeast side of the city.
