South Bend mayor goes on annual 2-week military duty

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – The mayor of South Bend is spending the next two weeks on military duty as part of an annual obligation with the U.S. Navy Reserve.

Pete Buttigieg’s office said Sunday that he will be serving in the Washington D.C. area through June 13. It’s part of a reserve duty requirement that also includes one weekend a month.

Buttigieg is a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve and served a seven-month deployment in Afghanistan last year. He joined the Navy Reserve in 2009 and was elected mayor in 2011.

The mayor’s office says he will keep in daily contact with administrators while he’s gone.
