Storms with heavy rain slam central Indiana
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Strong storms moving through central Indiana have created numerous problems across the area for much of the day.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Indianapolis and many of the surrounding counties through late Tuesday afternoon. Estimated rainfall since early Thursday morning has exceeded 4 inches in some locations, including in Greenwood, where heavy rain has been falling since early Tuesday morning.
Numerous roads are flooded across central Indiana, leading to closures. Strong winds with an early Thursday afternoon line of storms created numerous reports of trees down around the area as well.
As of 6 p.m. Tuesday, Indianapolis Power & Light reported nearly 5,000 customers without power. Duke Energy reported nearly 9,000 without power.
There were reports of heavy flooding in Hendricks County in the Brownsburg area and a park closure in Danville.
A flash flood watch remained in effect for east central Indiana until midnight Tuesday. Authorities say if you encounter a flooded roadway, please turn around and find an alternate route.
Noblesville reported about 4 p.m. Tuesday that these roads remained flooded:
- Little Chicago Road between Buttonwood Drive (South Harbour subdivision) and State Road 38.
- 186th Street between Promise Road and State Road 37.
- Promise Road from Monarch Springs Drive to 186th.
- Boden Road between Cold Stream Road and 146th Street.
- Mill Creek Road between State Road 38 to Maple Grove Way.
- 146th Street between Bergen Blvd and Olio Road.
- Olio Road between Tegler Drive aned 156th Street.
- 19th Street between Cherry and Division streets.
Hamilton County reported about 4:45 p.m. that these roads remained closed:
- Promise Road between 181st Street and 186th Street.
- Cumberland Road between 166th Street and Greenfield Avenue.
- Olio Road south of 156th Street.
- Cyntheanne Road between 146th and 156th streets.
- Flippins Road between 191st and 196th streets.
