Storms with strong winds, heavy rains move through central Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Severe weather warnings and watches have been issued for much of central Indiana Thursday night. 

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Bartholomew, Clay, Daviess, Decatur, Greene, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Jackson, Jennings, Johnson, Knox, Lawrence, Marion, Martin, Monroe, Morgan, Owen, Putnam, Rush, Shelby, Sullivan and Vigo counties.

That watch is in effect until 9 p.m.

6:37 p.m.

Keystone is blocked in both directions in the 5700 block after a tree snapped and three poles along with their wires were reported down.

A tornado warning for Clay, Parke and Vigo counties has expired. A severe thunderstorm warning for Bartholomew, Decatur, Johnson, Rush and Shelby counties has also expired.  

6:33 p.m.

Severe thunderstorm watches have now been canceled for Boone, Clinton, Fountain, Montgomery, Parke, Vermillion, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks and Marion counties. 

A severe thunderstorm watch was continued until 9 p.m. for Bartholomew, Brown, Clay, Daviess, Decatur, Greene, Jackson, Jennings, Johnson, Knox, Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Morgan, Owen, Putnam, Rush, Shelby, Sullivan and Vigo counties. 

Multiple trees are down in Marion and Hamilton counties. A report of four trees are down in Carmel near 156th and Ditch Road. A large tree was reported down near Hague Road and St. George Boulevard in Fishers. 

Another large, healthy tree was reportedly uprooted in the 6200 block of Dean Road in Broad Ripple. 

6:23 p.m. 

There are reports of tennis ball sized hail in Vermillion County near Clinton.

Another severe thunderstorm warning was issued, this time in Clay, Owen, Parke, Putnam and Vigo counties until 7:15 p.m.

The severe thunderstorm warning in Bartholomew, Decatur, Johnson, Rush and Shelby counties was continued until 6:45 p.m.

6:11 p.m.

A funnel cloud has been spotted in Vermillion County approximately three miles northeast of Blanford. 

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Bartholomew, Johnson and Rush counties. 

Authorities are reporting a construction trailer rolled over at 146th Street and Towne Road, impacting traffic. And golf ball sized hail has been reported in Roasedale. 

6:01 p.m.

All lanes of 865 is reopened after a short closure due to power lines down in the area. 

Hail up to 2.5 inches in diameter was reported approximately four miles southwest of Cayuga, the National Weather Service reports.

5:56 p.m. 

A tree was knocked down by heavy winds in front of North Central High School. Drivers should use caution as the tree is blocking the curb lane. 

5:54 p.m.

About 42,750 customers of Indianapolis Power & Light Co. and Duke Energy in Indianapolis and Hamilton County are without power. 

5:33 p.m.

A tent from the Mecum Auctions car event at the Indiana State Fairgrounds has blown onto East 38th Street.

5:25 p.m.

A wind gust of 60 mph was reported at West 46th Street and North High School Road in Indianapolis.

5:16 p.m.

Hail up to three-eights of an inch in diameter was reported in downtown Zionsville.

5:15 p.m.

Severe thunderstorm warning for Indianapolis and Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks and  Henry counties until 5:45 p.m.

5:14 p.m.

A wind gust of 53 mph was reported in Whitestown in Boone County.

4:37 p.m.

A trained weather spotter reproted pea-size hail northeast of Brownsburg near Maloney Road in Hendricks County.


Fountain, Montgomery and Tippecanoe counties are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 4:45 p.m.

Warren County is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 4:15 p.m. Benton County was under a severe thunderstorm warning until 4 p.m.
