Suspect arrested after 7 shot at party near Ball State
MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) — Police say a suspect is in custody following a shooting at a home near Ball State campus Saturday.
Muncie Police Chief Joe Winkle said VaShaun Harnett, 19, has been arrested for two counts of attempted murder.
Harnett was arrested around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, nearly 12 hours after the shooting that left seven people hurt.
Chief Winkle said the shooting stemmed from a confrontation that occurred at a home in the 2400 block of Euclid Avenue around 12:45 a.m.
One victim was flown to an Indianapolis hospital in critical condition. Chief Winkle said that victim is now considered stable. Two other victims remained in intensive care at the time of this writing.
Winkle said a local hospital will keep an additional two victims overnight for evaluation. Two other victims have been released from the hospital.
University officials confirmed one Ball State student was shot. That student has since been released from Ball Memorial Hospital.
“Keeping all members of our campus community safe is a top priority,” said Ball State University President Geoffrey S. Mearns in a statement. “This is a very unfortunate event. We wish all the victims a full and prompt recovery.”
The school is making counselors and other personnel available to the campus community.

Muncie police are investigating after a shooting at a home near Ball State’s campus left multiple people injured early Saturday morning, Muncie Police Chief Joe Winkle said.
The shooting happened around 12:45 a.m. at a home in the 2400 block of Euclid Avenue.
Chief Winkle said there was a large party at the home when some sort of confrontation occurred, turning into a shooting.
Seven people were shot and taken to the hospital. Three victims suffered life-threatening injuries.
Police have interviewed dozens of people and are working to identify a suspect in the shooting. Police said they believe they have interviewed a person of interest, however no arrests have been made as of 6:00 a.m. Saturday.
Ball State University released an alert online just after 1 a.m. advising students to stay away from the area as Muncie and Ball State police responded to the shooting. About 40 minutes later, the university released another alert saying there was no ongoing threat to campus.
People at the party were college-aged, Chief Winkle said. It is unclear at this time if any of the shooting victims are Ball State students.
