Suspect in Henry County double shooting in custody

KENNARD, Ind. (WISH) — The suspect in a Henry County double shooting is in custody.

According to the Indiana State Police, James Swift was taken into custody by Fishers police in Hamilton County.

Police were searching for the 40-year-old Swift after a man and woman were shot multiple times Thursday afternoon at a home in a small Henry County town.

Sarah Swift, 33, and Caleb Broad, 34, suffered life-threatening injuries. Swift was airlifted and Broad was taken by ambulance to an Indianapolis hospital. Their conditions were not available Thursday night.

Swift and Broad were found down in front of a home in the 200 block of North Main Street in Kennard. Authorities were dispatched at 5:16 p.m., said the county’s emergency management director.

A neighbor said he heard several pops before 5:30 p.m. and thought it was fireworks. Then, the neighbor told 24-Hour News 8’s Eric Feldman, state police and sheriff’s cars began arriving.

A 17-year-old boy who was visiting his grandmother next-door told Feldman that he heard at least two gunshots and a woman scream.

Kennard is a town of 460 located about 4 miles west of New Castle.
