Suspect killed in Owen Co. SWAT situation identified

SPENCER, Ind. (WISH) — The male suspect who died following a 30-plus-hour SWAT situation in Owen County has been identified.

The standoff began at a home on Kinnickinick Ridge around 11:20 p.m. Thursday. Authorities said 31-year-old Mason Johnson II forced his way inside and initially held two women and two children hostage. One of the women escaped. Both of the children – ages 2 and 9 – were released by Friday afternoon through negotiations with the man.

The standoff ended just after 7 a.m. Saturday when Johnson was shot and killed when he made himself visible while he held one of the hostages at gunpoint.

Shots were fired from the suspect toward the officers in the ordeal. There were no other injuries reported.
