Suspect remains in hospital, officer doing fine after shooting in Putnam County

PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — Indiana State Police in Putnam County say the investigation into a shooting involving an officer and suspect on Saturday is ongoing.

According to police, the suspect remains hospitalized and the officer is doing fine.

The shooting occurred just after 4:00 p.m. Saturday in the 4000 block of East County Road 375 South near Greencastle.

Officials said that authorities arrived at the residence in response to an earlier theft at a Greencastle store.

Officers were then confronted at the front door by a man wielding a shotgun. The man discharged toward the officers, striking one in the chest. The officer that was struck returned fire, hitting the suspect in the torso.

The suspect was later identified as 48-year-old Jeffrey R. Hunter. He was transported to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment.

The 27-year-old Cloverdale officer who was struck has been identified as D. Luke Brown. He was taken to a Terre Haute hospital to treat non-life threatening injuries. Brown was wearing a bullet proof vest at the time of the shooting.

Brown is also said to have provided medical attention to Hunter after being shot.

Police said the review of potential charges could be this week.
