Take in some local talent this summer with the Actors Theatre of Indiana!

The District Theatre, formerly known as Theatre on the Square, will have its grand re-opening Thursday, July 5 with the hit “Forbidden Broadway,” presented by Actors Theatre of Indiana (ATI). Journey through more than 20 Broadway shows and spend the evening with Carol Channing, Julie Andrews, Ethel Merman, the casts of The Lion King, Wicked, Mamma Mia, Hairspray and so many more in this entertaining tribute to some of Broadway’s greatest shows and stars. This hit show will enjoy a 20-show run in the newly-revamped District Theatre.

The long-running Off-Broadway hit musical revue “Forbidden Broadway” pokes, teases and lampoons anything Broadway has to offer – but always with love. This cannon of witty and often brilliant parodies is a time capsule of the American Theatre. It has won “Drama Desk,” “Obie” and “Outer Critics Circle,” among others, and many “Forbidden Broadway” actors have gone on to star on Broadway, television and in the movies.

ATI, a resident company based in Carmel, Ind., has brought professional Broadway Plays and Musicals like “Forbidden Broadway” to the stage for more than 13 years. ATI combines local talent with talent from across the country, all of which have performed in multiple productions on and off Broadway.
“Forbidden Broadway” was first seen at Palsson’s Supper Club on New York’s Upper West Side in January 1982. An unemployed actor, Gerard Alessandrini, wanted a showcase for his talents. He decided to assemble some of the musical parodies of Broadway shows he had written since childhood into a nightclub act. Critics and audiences were wowed and it has since become New York’s longest-running musical comedy revue.

Updated regularly, “Forbidden Broadway” has had several editions, countless revisions, three New York City performance spaces, several national and international tours, and thousands of special performances. Its historical run provides an informal and very funny history of the American musical theatre. “Forbidden Broadway” has remained one of the funniest evenings on or Off-Broadway.
