Honey bee colonies to land at Indy airport

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — On an average day, more than 100 flights land at Indianapolis International Airport. But lately, the buzz here is about the airport’s newest arrivals beyond the runway.

“They’re honey bees,” said Mike Seib who belongs to the White Lick Beekeepers Association.

This spring, the airport authority designated part of its protect habitat land surrounding the airport to be used as an apiary for White Lick – its members and anyone from the public who wants to learn about bees and beekeeping.

“We’re very excited,” said Seib.

Advocates say the project is more than exciting – it’s important. The nation’s honey bee population – which pollinates much of what we eat – is rapidly declining.

“The Indianapolis Airport Authority is committed to supporting sustainability efforts in central Indiana, using airport land to help preserve our natural resources” Indianapolis Airport Authority Executive Director Mario Rodriguez said in a statement.

Airport officials said the apiary will benefit the local environment, increase the honey bee population, and offer educational field days for the community and training for beekeepers.

“They’re offering the land that they have for us to use for a good purpose and it’s helping the community,” said Seib.
