Tornado sirens tested Thursday

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Counties across Indiana participated in two tornado drills Thursday as Severe Weather Preparedness Week continues in central Indiana.

The drills happened at 10:15 a.m., and again Thursday night from 7:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Last year, Indiana had 28 tornadoes reported, highlighted by the Plainfield and Indianapolis tornado on June 24. That tornado started in Hendricks County near Perry Road and U.S. 40, damaging over 200 cars at an auction facility and damaging over a dozen homes.

The tornado continued in to Marion County along Raceway Road near Blue Pine Drive where a couple of homes had roofs removed.

Indianapolis officials estimated 75 to 100 homes had at least minor damage.

The tornado was rated as an EF-1, with estimated winds between 95 mph to 100 mph.
