Two rescued from 4-foot flood waters near Fort Wayne

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – Two people were rescued from flood waters late Sunday night.

Police were called to Marion Center Road, between U.S. 27 and Winchester Road shortly after 11:15 p.m. The female who called 911 said her vehicle was stuck in deep floodwater.

When emergency crews arrived, they found her and a male sitting on top of a Jeep in the Saint Marys River floodplain. The water in the area was about four and a half feet deep.

Fire officials said the situation could have been much worse. The water off the road was about 15 feet deep at the time.

Rescue swimmers took life jackets to both victims on the Jeep, until boats could pull them to safety. The victims were in 50 degree water for about 20 to 30 minutes.

Both victims were checked out by medics at the scene, but it’s unclear if either were injured.

The Poe Community Volunteer Fire Department Chief said it’s important to “Drive to survive. If you see water, turn around and go the opposite direction from the water across the roadway.”

Crews from Poe, Southwest and Decatur fire departments all responded to the rescue.
