Two teens taken into custody after gun stolen from unlocked car

AVON, Ind. (WISH) — Two teens are in custody after a car was broken into and a gun was stolen.

The Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office received a call just before midnight on Wednesday after a man reported that a gun was stolen from his unlocked vehicle on Blue Sky Drive.

The victim had surveillance video of the suspects, which when shown to a neighbor, identified one of the two black male suspects as a student at Avon High School.

The 15-year-old student was taken into custody at the high school. The gun was recovered by HCSO deputies in the Sunchase neighborhood on Blue Sky Drive.

The other suspect, a 16-year-old from Indianapolis, was also taken into custody.

Through a statement, the Avon Community School Corporation addressed the gun rumor that circulated Thursday morning.

“At the start of the school day (Thursday, May 12, 2016), it was reported to staff that an Avon High School student may have been involved in a vehicle break-in where a gun was stolen. Immediately upon hearing this, a student was questioned by administrators and law enforcement. The student was cooperative. After a thorough search, no gun was found at the high school. Avon High School was never placed on lock down and our students are safe. We appreciate our students for staying alert and making us aware of this situation as well as the Hendricks County Sheriff Department for quickly investigating and handling the matter.”
