Vehicle traveling wrong way on I-70 in Henry Co. end in fatal crash
HENRY COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – A fatal crash was the result of a vehicle traveling the wrong direction on I-70 in Henry County Monday evening.
According to the Indiana State Police, officers were alerted to the presence of a vehicle traveling west in the eastbound lanes on I-70 near mile marker 122 around 10 p.m.
Shortly after receiving the initial call, officers learned of a crash near the 120 mile marker.
After arriving on scene, it was discovered that the crash was in fact a head-on collision.
Officers say that their early investigation indicates that a 2012 Hyundai, driven by 55-year-old Phaedra Winters, was traveling west in the eastbound lanes for an unknown reason. It was then that the Hyundai and a Honda, driven by 19-year-old Chase Thomas, collided.
ISP says that Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene. Winters was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis via helicopter for multiple fractures.
As a result of the crash, two other vehicles were forced to leave the roadway. The driver of one vehicle was treated and released at the scene, while the driver of the other vehicle refused treatment.
The deadly crash remains under investigation.
