Venezuelan political turmoil affecting families in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A political battle is brewing in Venezuela over who’s in charge.

Two different men are claiming to be the legitimate president of the country.

That international disagreement is having a ripple effect in the United States.

Last week in the U.S, bipartisan legislation was introduced that would give temporary protected status to Venezuelan nationals living in the America.

Venezuelans in the metro area  have taken action. Wednesday they visited the mayors of Indianapolis and Lawrence to request they recognize the interim president and reject Maduro’s dictatorship.

They also visited Monument Circle to raise awareness about what’s happening in their home country.

Community Link’s Marco Dominguez estimates that about 400 Venezuelan families live in the metro area,
most of them political refugees.
