Volunteers support senior safety for Indy Do Day
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A group of volunteers marked “Indy Do Day” Saturday morning with service projects aimed at promoting senior safety in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood of Indianapolis.
The “Safe at Home” initiative – led by non-profit CICOA Aging & In-Home Solution – has served more than 150 homes since 2010, organizers said.
Volunteers provide home safety modifications for low-income homeowners over age 60, including delivery and installation of “grab bars” in bathrooms, banisters in stairwells and hallways, handrails, step transitions and motion activated lighting.
Falls are among the leading causes of injury and death for senior citizens, the group said, despite being “largely preventable.”
“Nearly 90 percent of people age 65 and older say they want to remain in their current home for the rest of their lives,” according to CICOA. “The challenge is that, often, their homes are not designed to accommodate the needs of older adults or people with disabilities.”
