Woman fatally shot then pushed out of car on near east side
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police are investigating the near east side shooting death of a woman, marking the 16th criminal homicide in the city this year and the fifth in three days.
Police were called to the intersection of New York and Rural streets around 3 p.m. Sunday on a report of a person shot.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as 49-year-old Catrina Russell.
Police say a charcoal-colored Lexus pulled into the parking lot of the New York Express convenience store; that’s when a man in the passenger seat fired at least one shot at Russell who was driving.
Police say he then pushed the woman out of her car and drove off.
Russell was pronounced dead on scene by medics.
Officers found the Russell’s car a short time later parked on North Kealing Avenue, near 16th Street and North Sherman Drive.
The vehicle was abandoned when police found it, and detectives were looking on Sunday night for the person responsible for the shootings.
It’s unclear what relationship, if any, he had with the victim.
The shooting comes hours after five people were shot, two fatally, at the Sawmill Saloon, near 13th Street and Sherman Drive.
The Rev. Charles Harrison commented on Sunday’s violence via Twitter:
If you know anything in either case, you’re encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
