Women denied job because of ‘ghetto’ names, but company claims it was hacked

ST. LOUIS, MO (WCMH) — Two Missouri women say they were rejected for a job because of their names, but the company they applied to claims it was hacked.

Dornisha Zachery and Hermeisha Robinson both applied for a job at Mantality Health. Both got an email from the company that read:

“Thank you for your interest in careers at Mantality Health. Unfortunately we do not consider candidates that have a suggestive ghetto name. We wish you the best in your career search, regards.”

“The company looked at my name and said we don’t care about what you’ve done in life,” Zachery told KMOV-TV. “Your name is going is going to dismiss you completely.”

The company’s CEO claims a former disgruntled employee likely hacked into their Indeed account and sent the emails. As many as 20 went out, including two other women in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Police are investigating.

A spokesperson for Indeed clarified to KMOV that the company’s account was not compromised. It stated that companies are responsible for keeping their passwords updated and confidential.
