Work continues on Martin Luther King memorial in Kokomo

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) – Work is underway in Kokomo on a memorial to Martin Luther King Jr.

Project leaders and construction workers want to finish the memorial in time for an April 4 unveiling. That’s the anniversary of King’s assassination.

The Kokomo Tribune reports that earlier this month workers installed eight engraved plaques in the monument wall. Each plaque describes part of the civil rights leader’s life.

Coordinator Milton Beach says the goal is for the monument to have historical and educational components. The plaques include information about King’s family, education and ministry. They also detail the Montgomery bus boycotts and lunch counter sit-ins.

Six donated memorial benches and an 8-foot Indiana limestone statue of King are to be installed.

The monument will be located at the junction of Apperson Way and LaFountain Street.
