World War II era hand grenade recovered at retirement center
COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) – Police in Columbus recovered a World War II hand grenade at a retirement center on Tuesday.
Columbus police officers were called to the Four Seasons Retirement Center in the 1900 block of Taylor Road around 11 a.m. A call came in from that location about a live hand grenade that was found by a maintenance worker.
The maintenance worker found the grenade inside a cardboard box while cleaning out an apartment closet, according to the manager of the facility. The apartment belonged to a resident who had recently passed away.
According to the family, the resident was a World War II Veteran who had been injured during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
A Columbus Police Department Hazardous Devices Unit officer arrived to secure the explosive.
