Fishers native set to be picked in first round of MLB draft

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) — This coming Sunday, eyes will be on Denver, Colorado, as some of the world’s most talented prospects look to be selected in this year’s MLB draft.

Sam Bachman could be the highest drafted player with Indiana ties since former Hoosier Kyle Schwarber went No. 4 overall in 2014.

The former Hamilton Southeastern Royal is coming off a strong junior season at the University of Miami (Ohio) where he recorded a 1.91 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 59.2 innings pitched.

Bachman’s work ethic only grew despite not being highly recruited out of high school.

“Honestly, I was just a good high school player,” Bachman said. “I got some good innings, some good outings and got some wins and stuff, but I was never the top guy. I was never the first starter, or the guy that people were throwing in the game first so, I was always watching from afar.”

While Bachman is ready for the next step, he is still anxiously awaiting draft night.

“I’m sure it’s going to be pretty emotional, but it’s a lifelong dream,” said Bachman.

“This is the MLB draft, it’s the vehicle to get me into where I want to be, in the big league. And so, you think back to those late nights, early mornings, even playing tee-ball with dad at 4 years old. And so, with all that stuff is kind of going in my head and then we’re here, so everything’s kind of crazy.”

Although Bachman has made it to the top of some draft boards, his goals do not stop there.

“I want to be the best pitcher in the Midwest, in the country, in this draft, and eventually I want to be the best in the major leagues.”

The 2021 MLB Draft will take place July 11-13.
