Indy Women in Tech Championship heads to the Brickyard

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Most think of race cars at the mention of Indianapolis Motor Speedway. But in a few weeks, a different kind of driver comes to town.

“I’m just very happy that fairways aren’t this tight normally. So, I definitely would have hit a few people that would be in the stands,” said Lexi Thompson.

Lexi Thompson comes to IMS ahead of the IWiT Championship next month ranked 5th in the world. The nine-time winner on the LPGA tour impressed the likes of driver Zach Veach while driving on pit road.

“It’s incredible to see someone as talented as Lexi come out here with her sport which she’s been a part of her whole life just like I have been in motorsport. So, to see two worlds that are vastly different, but in a way they have a lot of similarities, is very special for me,” said Veach.

“The whole message behind IWiT. The empowerment, the education, the dedication…those kind of pieces really fit with the Indy 500. It’s about the technology that’s showcased here. So it’s just another way to continue to do what we do best, which is showcase new technology and trying to get women involved in the technology side of things too,” said Doug Boles.

Last year marked the inaugural Indy Women in Tech Championship a IMS, a tournament that Lexi Thompson won. And she says that winning it two years in a row would mean the world to her, especially at a venue like IMS.

“It was a huge honor to win it last year, and to be able to do all the traditions. But to win it again…it would mean the world to me. I’m just gonna take it one shot at a time. There’s a lot of golf to be played, now with it being a 72-holer. So, but it’ll be a special week once again,” said Thompson.

Lexi will have another shot at drinking milk starting Aug. 16th.
