Record amount raised at AC’s Golf Classic for Teachers’ Treasures

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – One day of golf, on Monday, resulted in a record amount for Teachers’ Treasures.

WISH-TV sports director Anthony Calhoun’s annual AC Charity Golf Classic raised $330,000 for the organization.

“Over the years, I have witnessed the positive impact Anthony Calhoun has made in our communities outside of his role at WISH-TV,” said McCoy. “AC is truly the leader in raising awareness, working selflessly to promote and do extraordinary things, especially for underserved communities and families. We are extremely proud of all of the work he does and thrilled that he is a part of our team.”

AC’s golf classic is an annual event that raises money for Teacher’s Treasures, a non-profit store for teachers to obtain school supplies for students in need. Since 2013, the event has grown to be one of the most successful golf fundraisers in Indiana to include athletes, coaches, educators, celebrities, business, and community leaders from all over, raising over $2 million dollars.

Since joining WISH-TV in 1998, AC has devoted countless hours to supporting great causes that help underserved communities in Indianapolis, continuously breaking records for fundraising and helping to raise millions in donations. In addition to being an Emmy award winner in sportscasting, Anthony Calhoun has been recognized for his longtime commitment to serving others. He was awarded the prestigious Pathfinder Award from the Indiana Sports Corp in 2017.  Prior recipients of this distinguished achievement include Peyton Manning, Condoleezza Rice, Oscar Robertson, Larry Bird, and Tony Dungy.

“Indy is my home, and I am blessed to be in the kind of position to do the things I enjoy and support causes that are important to me like our annual golf classic,” said Anthony Calhoun, WISH-TV sports director. “For eight years, we’ve been able to help teachers get the tools they need to help students in need, and we are truly grateful for all those who donate, volunteer, support, and sponsor this important event every year, making it one of the biggest fundraisers in Indy”

Teachers’ Treasures was founded in 2000 by a retired school principal, Phyllis Imel, who wished to continue helping the at-risk children in the community succeed in school. The “free store for teachers” opened in a small unused area in the basement of Washington Community School near Westside. A dedicated staff of volunteers began seeking product and financial contributions which could be used to provide teachers with the educational supplies and materials needed by the children in their classrooms. As awareness and interest grew throughout the educational and business communities, so did the need for more room. Today, the new store is located at 1800 E. 10th Street in Indianapolis.
