House Dems want answers on President’s Obamacare repeal efforts

WASHINGTON (Nexstar) – House Democrats are demanding details about President Donald Trump’s efforts to scrap Obamacare.

New York Rep. Jerry Nadler says Democrats want to know why the Justice Department is fighting to kill Obamacare

“The house is determined to get answers on the administration’s nakedly political decision to rip affordable health care away from millions and millions of Americans,” Nadler said.

He says Democrats are now demanding files from the administration officials who ordered the Obamacare repeal efforts.

U.S. Attorney General William Barr defended his department’s actions during a house hearing on Tuesday.

“I’m a lawyer. I’m not in charge of health care. I litigate on behalf of the United States,” he said.

The Justice Department says it believes the Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional because Congress repealed the individual mandate; the law requiring that Americans must have health insurance or face a tax.

“The president has made it clear, he wants strong health care legislation, he wants to protect pre-existing conditions if the courts accepts the legal arguments we’ve presented,” Barr said.

The president says he will unveil his health care plan after the 2020 election.

We asked Republican Florida Sen. Rick Scott what happens in the meantime.

“There’s a lot of conversations up here, I’m sure the Democrats are doing the same thing,” Scott said.

Democrats say they will continue to defend Obamacare as the issue is expected to eventually reach the U.S. Supreme Court.
