President Trump renewing call for Congress to spend billions on infrastructure improvements

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – President Trump is renewing his call for Congress to spend billions on infrastructure improvements.

The president spent Friday touring Florida’s Lake Okeechobee.

The trip comes as the White House renews its efforts to improve America’s roads, airports and waterways.

The president first called for an infrastructure bill in 2017, but Congress never moved the idea forward.

Now, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says lawmakers are willing to listen.

“We invite the president to show us… what he wants to do on infrastructure. Let’s get together. We have ideas. He has ideas,” Pelosi said.

Deputy White House Press Secretary Hogan Gidley said it’s up to Democrats to make the first move.

“They ran on and won in Trump districts in close elections, promising to work with the president,” Hogan said.

The president’s renewed interest in infrastructure comes as his 2020 Democratic presidential challengers begin to roll out their proposals.

Democratic presidential hopeful Amy Klobuchar said infrastructure will be a key component of her 2020 campaign.

“There’s a reason the president’s been talking about it, he just hasn’t gotten it done. And I believe there is a will to get it done across the nation,” she said.

Both parties agree an infrastructure package would cost billions, if not trillions, of dollars.
