Trump thanks tax cuts for economy increase, critics disagree
It’s tax day and President Donald Trump says that’s cause for celebration thanks to recent GOP tax cuts but critics say recent tax law changes hurt, not helped, most people.
President Trump spent tax day in Minnesota where he told a roundtable that the new tax law is supercharging the economy.
The president says the cuts which went into effect last year created jobs, boosted consumer spending, and helped families save money. “We have over 6 million new jobs, nobody would have believed that would be possible,” said Trump. “We doubled the standard deduction for everybody”
But a recent Economist/YouGov poll shows 46 percent of registered voters disapprove of the GOP tax plan.
The executive director of the activist group Tax March is pushing for the elimination of the GOP tax plan.
“its actually a massive tax give away to wealthy corporations and individuals, at the expense of working-class Americans,” said Executive Director of Tax March Maura Quint.
Senator Bernie Sanders says it’s an issue he’ll campaign heavily on going into the 2020 election. “You don’t give tax breaks to billionaires and cut nutrition programs like the WIC program for pregnant women and little babies,” Sen. Sanders said.
Government data shows the average tax refund so far is about $2,800, that’s roughly $20 less than 2018.
