Messy mix of rain and snow Wednesday

Tuesday night forecast

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A potent system sliding in from the south could bring several inches of snow to portions of central Indiana Wednesday through Thursday.

Tuesday night:

Quiet weather with a partly cloudy sky overnight. Temperatures run a bit colder, with lows falling to the middle 20s.

Wednesday & Thursday:

A massive winter system takes aim on the state heading into Wednesday afternoon. This is a tricky forecast due to the various precipitation types in play. We do believe that the Wednesday morning commute should be just fine, with increasing clouds through the morning hours. The winter weather advisory goes into effect at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

By lunchtime, some precipitation will start to arrive across the state, possibly starting as rain for many.

We’ll likely see a changeover to sleet/snow, or all snow by mid-afternoon for the northern half of the state. There will be a fine line of heavy snow and very little snow, and that line likely sets up in or around the Indy metro area, making this a tricky forecast.

Steady precipitation will continue through the rest of the afternoon and evening, splitting the state in half with consistent snow to the north and steady rain to the south.

Colder air filling in Wednesday night will transition any scattered precipitation left over into snow, with some lighter additional accumulations possible rolling into Thursday morning.

Highest accumulations will be north of Indianapolis, but in and around the metro, many could see an inch more. The big question will be where that line of transition sets up.

Bottom line: The Wednesday evening commute will be messy and potentially very slick, and the Thursday morning commute has the potential of being quite slick as well. Stay aware of this forecast as it will likely change before Wednesday morning.

8-day forecast:

Much colder air moves into the state briefly for Friday, with morning temperatures in the single digits and afternoon highs only in the middle 20s. We’ll see temperatures rebound a bit by the weekend, with highs in the upper 30s Saturday, mid 40s Sunday, and near 50° on Monday!
