Frigid temperatures return

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — After record breaking rainfall and mild temperatueres Wednesday, much colder air moves into the state starting tonight.

Some notes about our Wednesday. We broke the daily rainfall record for this date, with a rain total of 1.15″ in Indianapolis. The previous record was 0.90″ set back in 1950.

Tonight:

Rain sheild is slowly working out of central Indiana. Before it is completely out, we could see some changeover to a wintry mix of rain and snow, as much colder air funnels in behind this system.  No accumulation is expected, but it does go to show how significant the cold air is that will be moving in this evening.

By late tonight, precipitation will be gone. Expect cloud cover to hang around, and temperatuers to fall quickly. Ovenright lows fall to the upper teens, with wind chills falling into the single digits.

Thursday:

Cold will settle in to central Indiana. With the exception of a few flurries through the day, we should be relatively quiet.  Highs only top out in the middle to upper teens.

Friday:

Coldest day of the next several will be Friday. Early morning temperauters will be between 0° to 5°, with wind chills will likely be in the -10° to -20° range, making for a brutally cold start..

The rest of the day provides us with cloud cover, cold temps, and isolated flurries from time to time.

Weekend:

Pattern will ramp up starting this weekend, with a couple of weak waves coming from the northwest, which should squeeze out some light snow both Saturday and Sunday. Early indications push out around 1″ of snow. Temperatuers only top out in the upper 20s both days.

8 day forecast:

A slightly more significant wave with more moisture and higher winds could produce slightly higher accumulations on Monday night into Tuesday morning, It appears another significant cold blast will work in after the system for mid-week, with highs in the teens Tuesday and Wednesday.
