Severe storms likely as we close out this work week

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Happy Friday everyone! The end of this work week will be a bumpy one, especially by this afternoon/evening as severe storms are likely. Make sure to stay weather aware today!

Storms have already begun to fire up and one cluster of storms has already reached severe criteria.

A Tornado WATCH has been issued for much of central Indiana meaning conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop. Stay weather aware!

Nearly the entire area is under an ENHANCED Risk for severe weather, a 3 out of 5 on our severe weather scale. An ENHANCED Risk means that numerous severe storms are possible. Our southernmost communities and some of the Ohio Valley is under a MODERATE Risk this afternoon, meaning that more widespread severe storms are likely.

In terms of threats, this is one of the better chances we have seen so far this year for severe weather. Damaging wind and large hail will be likely today, especially in southern Indiana. In addition to the primary threats, a few tornadoes and flash flooding cannot be ruled out, so download and keep the Storm Track 8 weather app handy this afternoon.

Temperatures will slowly sink into the low 70s late tonight and eventually into the upper 60s through the overnight.

We’ll see another round of storms to start the weekend, though the severe weather threat tomorrow is nil.

We will see rain cooled highs in the upper 70s.

More rain is likely Sunday as our weathermaker continues to slowly spin off to the southeast. If you’re looking for a break in the rain, better chances for sunshine look to return as early as Tuesday and mid-week next week.

With clearing skies through the middle of next week, temperatures will rebound into the upper 80s and low 90s.
