Heavy rain likely this weekend

Weekend rain and flood safety tips

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — We’ve seen a few showers for the beginning of Friday but several more rounds of rain are expected this weekend.

As of noon Friday, Indianapolis has picked up 3.75″ for the month of March. This is about 0.71″ above normal for the month.

We have the potential to pick up more rainfall this weekend as several rounds of rain move into the state. Some of the thunderstorms may be on the stronger side with damaging winds, hail, an isolated tornado and very heavy rainfall. Many locations across central Indiana could pick up at least an inch if not close to 2″. It all depends on where the heaviest showers and storms set up across the state.

With this much rain in a short period of time there’s a possibility we may see some flooding. Here are a few flooding tips. If you see a roadway covered with water – turn around don’t drown. You can never be certain the water hasn’t washed away the roadway. It doesn’t take much fast flowing water to pick up objects. It only takes six inches to carry away a person, 12 inches can carry away a car and 18-24 inches can carry away a truck or SUV. So if you are out this weekend getting some of the essentials make sure you use extra caution.
