How often does Indianapolis see ‘big’ snows?

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — After significant accumulation across central Indiana, we took at look at how frequently we receive half a foot of snow or more in Indianapolis.

After looking at the records dating back to 1885, it appears hitting 6 inches of snow or more in a day is quite rare!  Over 133 years, the city has recorded only 54 days with 6 inches or more of snow. That’s out of 48,545 days!

The most that one season (October to September for record-keeping purposes) has seen these “big” snows is three times, which has happened during four winters, most recently during the 2013-2014 season.

We’ve picked up two “big” snows in a season twice.

With another large system taking aim on the Midwest, this is an interesting statistic to keep in mind, as snow totals for parts of the Midwest could be on the high side again.
