Live blog: Weekend snowstorm heads for central Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A winter storm is projected to bring as much as 9 inches of snow and possible subzero temperatures to central Indiana. 

9:40 p.m.

Johnson, Morgan and Shelby counties were added to a winter storm warning Friday night. It was an upgrade from the winter storm watch issued Thursday and is in effect from 4 a.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday. 

Organizations that announced closings for Saturday included food pantries, churches, an animal shelter, a historical society and a community center.

8:15 p.m.

Chief Meteorologist Ashley Brown was on Facebook Live answering questions and providing an update ahead of a Saturday snowstorm.

5 p.m.

Groups in central Indiana canceled or delayed Saturday events on Friday ahead of the snowstorm:

  • Indiana University announced its East campus in Richmond would be closed Saturday due to winter weather.
  • Roncalli High School said all basketball games at Center Grove planned for Saturday would be postponed to Feb. 5.
  • The Circle City Conference Swimming and Diving Championship scheduled for Saturday at Ben Davis High School was postponed to Jan. 22 at the Schools Without Pools Meet at IU’s Natatorium.
  • The boys basketball game at Shakamak High School in Jasonville was postponed with no immediate makeup date. 
  • The status of other Indiana high school boys basketball games can be found here.
  • The status of Indiana high school girls basketball games can be found here.

The city of Noblesville asked residents to stay home on Saturday and Sunday if possible and park off of streets so that city crews can plow.

4 p.m.

A winter storm warning was issued Friday afternoon for counties in central Indiana. It was an upgrade from the winter storm watch issued Thursday and is in effect from 4 a.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday. 

Most areas are expected to get 4 to 7 inches of snow, while snowfall totals near Muncie could be up to 9 inches. Wind could create blizzard-like conditions on Saturday afternoon and evening. Some ice could accumulate, and temperatures will drop below zero by Monday morning. 

The Indiana Department of Transportation said trucks would be out by midnight, and by 5 a.m. Saturday they expected to have 50 trucks in Indianapolis alone and 200 trucks throughout central Indiana. Trucks will distribute salt Sunday on main roads during freezing conditions.
