Soggy end to April

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — It certainly has been a soggy last few weeks across central Indiana, and don’t have to look at the numbers to prove it. To date, April 2019 ranks as the 30th-wettest on record.

Many areas around the state are dealing with standing water in neighborhoods and farm fields – especially around creeks, streams and rivers. The numerous rounds of rain over the past two weeks has put us at a decently sized surplus across the state.

Going into the last 2 days of the month, we’re on a 5-day measurable rain streak and have picked up rain nine out of the last 14 days, including two of our biggest daily rainfalls in that period.

Since April 14, all of central Indiana is running at least 1″ above the average to date. Many are into the 2.5″-3.5″ surplus. That’s a lot of rain in a short amount of time.

As a result, numerous river flood warnings are in place this week. The biggest concern at this point is the Wabash River out west.  Many other rivers have already crested as of Monday afternoon.

Flooding will continue to be a concern over the next several days, as multiple rounds of rain are in the forecast through Friday morning. There is some good news – widespread heavy rain is more likely to our west, so we shouldn’t be adding to the ongoing flooding issues across the entire area, however a few isolated downpours this week could create a few localized issues.

Something to keep in mind: we’ve been above average with precipitation every month so far this year. We are now moving into the (traditionally) wettest three-month stretch in central Indiana. May is usually the wettest month of record for the year.
