White River flooding causes evacuation of Hamilton County campground
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Flood warnings are in effect for the White River at Noblesville and near the Nora neighborhood in Indianapolis, the National Weather Service says.
The flood warning for Noblesville is in effect through about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday while the warning for the Nora area is in effect through about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The White River was expected to crest above flood stage in Delaware, Madison, Hamilton, Marion and Morgan counties on Tuesday night, the weather service says.
Hamilton County Parks and Recreation has evacuated and closed its White River Campground north of Noblesville as a result of the predicted flooding. The river had already flooded a portion of the campground by 9 a.m. Tuesday. The campground will reopen once the water has receded.
Indianapolis government had alerted residents Monday about the anticipated flooding of low-lying areas in the city. Ben Easley, chief communications officer for the Indianapolis Department of Public Works, told News 8 in an email: “We are still seeing the White River in what we consider a ‘Minor Flood Stage’ (since this morning) in which low-lying areas near the waterway could see some possible flooding. That said, it seems like most gauges are levelling off, arriving at their highest points. While some parts of the river could see a few more inches of rise in water level, we don’t expect further drastic upgrades to ‘Moderate’ or ‘Major’ flood stages.”
Other low-level flooding is happening in other parts of central Indiana as well, according to the Indianapolis page of the weather service.
