Richard Essex is a Zionsville native and graduate of Indiana University. He joined News 8 as a reporter in January 2018. Prior to that, Richard worked in Lexington, Kentucky and Raleigh, North Carolina as an investigative reporter. Before those jobs, he worked almost 10 years at
WTHR in Indianapolis.
Richard’s first exposure to a television newsroom was in 1982, when then WISH-TV news director, Lee Giles, gave him a tour of the station. It was several years before Richard would come full circle, working at the Indiana Statehouse and in construction before beginning a career in broadcasting. His first job in radio was in Orlando, Florida. He made the jump to television in 1998 as a weekend weather anchor/reporter at KLAX in Alexandria, Louisiana.
Richard is married and has two children and “one fat dog.” He says his family is thrilled to be back home.
