ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) – The sister of Gary woman accused of killing a newborn’s mother and then trying to pass off the infant as her own says the charges against her sibling are “a hard pill to swallow.”
April Jones tells The Herald Bulletin there must be a “missing piece” in authorities’ account of what allegedly happened because the story is so bizarre.
Jones attended Monday’s arraignment of her 36-year-old sister, Geraldine R. Jones, who’s charged with murder, kidnapping and criminal confinement. She allegedly posed as a child welfare worker and lured 23-year-old Samantha Fleming of Anderson to Lake County under the pretense that Fleming had a court hearing.
Authorities say Fleming’s body was found in a Gary home April 17. Her infant daughter was found in the care of Jones’ older sister.
ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) – A 23-year-old Anderson woman who authorities say was stabbed to death by a woman posing as a child-welfare worker had contact with the Indiana Department of Child Services two years ago.
The Times of Munster reports court documents show a case manager from the agency interacted with Samantha Fleming after a domestic disturbance in Feb. 2013.
Fleming was found stabbed to death in a Gary home last week.
Police say Fleming went to the home with her 3-week old daughter and 36-year-old Geraldine Jones, who identified herself as a child-welfare worker.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Jones told Fleming on April 6 that she needed to go with her to a hearing.
Jones was charged earlier this week with murder, kidnapping and criminal confinement in Fleming’s death.
According to police, Fleming’s relatives in Indianapolis have her child.
ANDERSON, Ind. (WISH) – Court documents released Tuesday chronicle the details of how Samantha Fleming, the Anderson mother of three, was lured out of her home and taken to Gary where she was later found dead.
Neighbors say Geraldine Jones showed up at Samantha Fleming’s home and asked for her by name.
“She [Jones] said, ‘Samantha Fleming,’ she said the lady’s name, and I said, ‘Well I think that’s my neighbor,'”said Harold Smith, who lives next door to Fleming.
Madison County prosecutors said Jones showed up at the West Claire Street apartment posing as a Department of Child Services employee.
“We both walked upstairs together, she had the paperwork, the briefcase, professionally dressed,” said Smith.
But prosecutors say Jones was a con-artist who killed Fleming days later in Gary. They also say they don’t know how the two knew each other.
“Its very bizarre,” said Rodney Cummings, Madison County prosecutor. “And why this individual, out of all the prospective victims there could’ve been, why this individual in our community we really don’t have an answer for that, yet.”
Court documents show Jones told Fleming she was there for a surprise visit and that she had to make a court appearance in Gary.
They also show Fleming was told to bring her daughter Serenity because it would look better. Eleven days after they left the apartment, Fleming was found dead, stabbed at least 10 times, and stuffed in a bag. The baby was found safe and is back with family
“Huge surprise, huge and we’re here almost everyday,” said Laura Hill, who owns a salon on the first floor of Fleming’s apartment building. “We don’t know anything that was going on, just until we read and people calling us and asking if we had heard anything, and we knew nothing.”
The situation left neighbors in disbelief.
“People you knew, you see one minute, and now she’s gone, its crazy,” said Smith.
Cummings said there are no open investigations on Fleming with the state, making it even more bizarre that Fleming would go with Jones to Gary.
Prosecutors said Jones is still in Texas where she traveled to after Fleming’s death.
Detectives from Anderson and Gary are there now speaking with her.
Depending on if she waives extradition, it could take 30 to 45 days to get her back to Indiana to face a judge
MADISON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – A Gary, Indiana woman is now under arrest and charged with murder in a bizarre kidnapping case out of Anderson.
Geraldine Jones was arrested Monday afternoon. She’s charged with murder, kidnapping, and criminal confinement.
Jones was arrested in Texas after checking into a hospital with depression.
Samantha Fleming went missing after she and her three-week old daughter were lured from their West Claire Street apartment in Anderson earlier this month. The woman who showed up at her door claimed to be from the Department of Child Services.
Fleming was found dead last week in a Gary home. Police say she was stabbed, doused in bleach, and stuffed in a plastic container.
DCS is also questioning the case.
“It’s not just random that someone knocks on your door and here they are with the police,” said James Wide of DCS.
Wide says if a case manager makes a home visit there was likely a court decision beforehand, and all employees will have ID’s, and be accompanied by a local law enforcement officer.
“They may have to get the sheriff, if the sheriff isn’t available may have to get a state trooper, but it will be a uniformed officer.
At the time of her disappearance there were no active DCS investigation on Fleming, and Anderson police say there were no recent calls to the house.
The baby is safe and is back with family.
The Madison County Prosecutor’s Office is now handling the investigation.
