IU McKinney School of Law celebrating minority women

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – People in the community are working to break the mold in the legal field, hoping a celebration will motivate change.

They call it the Black Women’s Appreciation Ceremony.

The celebration will be filled with live performances, spoken word and a few keynote speakers.

Ericka Bryant and Ariona Anderson are two future lawyers from the McKinney School of Law that have a passion for the cause.

“I feel like it’ll help change the faces of people in the legal field because right now it’s a predominantly male field,” Anderson said.

“It’s good to have women at the forefront.”

Bryant believes the event will inspire more young women to climb to the top and shine.

“Young people want to see the next big thing and as black women we are the next big thing in so many ways,” she said.

In the event’s second year, organizers have added the chance for a students to be awarded scholarship money to pursue their careers in law.

Anderson says it’s just another way to make sure they are striving for progress.

“We do have a voice here, we do have a space here and we are in this profession,” she said.
