Fallen Deputy Pickett escorted from hospital to downtown

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Slain Boone County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Pickett was transported from St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital to the Marion County Coroner’s Office in a Monday morning procession.

Pickett was assisting Lebanon police with a vehicle pursuit on Friday when two suspects bailed from the car and ran. Pickett continued the pursuit on foot and was shot in the head by 21-year-old Anthony Baumgardt, according to Indiana State Police. The Boone County prosecutor on Monday afternoon set a 2 p.m. Tuesday news conference to announce formal charges against Baumgardt.

Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen recalled the first time he met Pickett — during Pickett’s job interview.
“As soon as I sat down and talked to him and saw that fire in his eye, and he said this is what he always wanted to be–a K-9 officer–I knew that I had probably one of the best officers I could ever ask for,” Nielsen said.
Police union president Rick Snyder praised Pickett for donating his organs.
“I think if you look up the definition of hero, that would sum it up,” Snyder said.

Pickett’s organs were harvested for donation at St. Vincent, and he was declared dead Monday morning.

Nielsen said a funeral service for Pickett is being tentatively planned for Friday, with a visitation tentatively being planned for Thursday. Authorities have been working to secure venues for both events.
