INDOT meeting on I-65 construction Thursday

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – It still may be cold and snowy outside, but INDOT says construction season is coming up fast.

One project will affect the south side.

Crews will soon start work to add more lanes on I-65 south of Indianapolis, from Southport Road to Main Street in Greenwood.

It’s part of the governor’s ‘Major Moves 2020’ construction project. Lawmakers passed a bill to pay for it last year.

It’s designed to add lanes to four lane interstates that are almost 50-years-old.

The general assembly approved access to $400 million dollars for these projects, focused on heavily traveled four lane interstates.

It’s a $35.9 million dollar project designed to alleviate some of the congestion along I-65. Eventually, the state will widen I-65 from Southport Road all the way to State Road 44 near Franklin.

“This will help accommodate additional traffic this area sees. A lot of people getting caught behind trucks because there are only two lanes. This will leave more room for traffic, and will address current needs and those in the future,” said Will Wingfield, INDOT spokesperson.

INDOT is holding a pre-construction meeting Thursday evening to answer any questions you may have about traffic impact. The meeting goes from 6 to 730 p.m. in the Greenwood City Center Council Room at 300 South Madison Avenue.

The project is set to start mid-March.
