Muncie shelter to stay open 24 hours for pet adoption event

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) – A central Indiana animal shelter is planning a marathon adoption day in hopes of finding homes for about 140 animals currently housed there.

The Muncie Animal Shelter will be open 24 hours starting at midnight Thursday as part of a “Just One Day” national shelter event.

Director Phil Peckinpaugh tells The Star Press the shelter plans to reduce adoption fees to $11 and will not euthanize any animals that day.

The adoption fee includes microchipping, sterilization and vaccinations.

Peckinpaugh says the shelter will be open until 11:59 p.m. Thursday or until it runs out of animals.

The shelter typically takes in about 4,000 animals a year. About 1,000 are adopted, and some are placed through rescue groups. Peckinpaugh says about 12 percent were euthanized in 2014.
